Four entrepreneurship archetypes
Research has identified four entrepreneurship archetypes in the South African SME market and identified the components that needs to be strengthened to ensure that these archetypes thrive:
- High-tech Entrepreneurship Model – In this model intellectual property (IP) is developed by research universities or centers and commercialized with support from angel investors and venture capital.
- External Trigger Model – This model emerges as a result of external circumstances which result in a number of skilled and experienced people in a position to start their own businesses
- The Mothership Model – This model describes businesses that emerge from existing companies resulting in smaller spinoffs supported by the existing business
- Local Hero Model – Businesses which emerge as a result of an inspirational success of another local business
